Lincoln , 1st August, 2006
The Nebraska Workforce Development – Department of Labor will begin taking claims with its modernized Unemployment Insurance payment system at 8:00 a.m. Aug. 7th.
As part of the implementation process, it will be necessary to have a temporary suspension of the claims taking process from 5:00 p.m. Aug. 2nd through 8 a.m. Aug. 7th. This will encompass two business days and the weekend. Claimants will be unable to file claims by phone or Internet during this time. To minimize the inconvenience, the Nebraska Workforce Development – Department of Labor (NWD-DOL) decided to use the least busy claim days for the system transition. Claimants have been informed of the suspension in the claims-taking process so that they can make the necessary adjustments.
Labor Commissioner Fernando Lecuona III said he is very excited about the new system.
“Ultimately, this system creates new efficiencies that will allow us to better serve the citizens of Nebraska” Lecuona said. “I am very excited about this new system and the opportunities it will create.”
The NWD-DOL contracted for $7.9 million with TCS America to provide the new system and train agency employees to use it. Lecuona said TCS America is meeting its obligation to train and update the skills of Department of Labor employees so they will be able to operate the system.
Surya Kant, President of TCS America, said he is also pleased with the new system.
“Working together, TCS America and the Nebraska Department of Labor achieved a first for any state, modernizing an unemployment insurance benefits system within 24 months while staying on budget,” Kant said. “Additionally, TCS America is providing the Department of Labor team the training necessary to efficiently operate and maintain this system in the years to come. We appreciate the opportunity to serve the state and the dedication of the Department of Labor team.”
All work on the project has been done on site in Lincoln. There are 45 individuals working on the project, including 29 TCS America employees and 16 Department of Labor employees. TCS America met its contractual obligation to hire 25 percent of its 29 workers locally. The other TCS America employees moved to the Lincoln area to work on the project. TCS America is a New York based company.
While the Benefit Payment System project is complete, TCS America is still working with the agency on other related matters. The other contractual work with TCS is scheduled to end in December.
An unveiling of the system, with an overview, will be September 11th time TBD. Media representatives will be invited to attend.
