TCS helps Cummins prepare for retirement of legacy mainframe applications

TCS helped Cummins to prepare for the retirement of legacy mainframe system, enabling the organization to upgrade its IT function for increased business agility and scalability. This has resulted in better management of its rapidly changing and growing business needs.

The Customer: Cummins Inc., a global power leader headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, USA, designs, manufactures, distributes and services engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems for its customers in approximately 190 countries.

Business Scenario: Cummins’ vast supply chain depends on a dedicated mainframe application system which is ridden with numerous challenges.

  • High cost of hardware and software mainframe upgrades
  • Inability of the legacy application to keep pace with the needs of Cummins’ global, modern and complex business
  • Diminishing mainframe skill set and support
In the light of these challenges, Cummins plans to retire its legacy mainframe applications by 2017.

TCS’ Solution:

  • We worked closely with the Cummins team to identify next generation applications that would match the processing capabilities of the mainframe system and have the scalability to keep pace with Cummins’ growing business needs.
  • Simultaneously, we worked with the Cummins team to optimize mainframe costs by reducing the consumption targets for Central Processing Unit (CPU) on the mainframe, thereby successfully downgrading to a less CPU-intensive mainframe processor.
  • Using the Six Sigma based Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) approach, our team completed a detailed analysis of job dependencies. We developed innovative methods that helped identify solutions outside the mainframe system.

Results:

  • Cummins now operates on a considerably leaner mainframe as a result of the closure of nearly 6000 jobs, over 2300 online transactions and over 4500 reports.
  • With TCS’ help, Cummins has successfully migrated millions of lines of code from the monolithic mainframe architecture to next generation supply chain IT solutions. This has enabled Cummins to upgrade its IT function enabling better business agility and scalability.
  • Leveraging our best practices in performance tuning, Cummins has succeeded in reducing the mainframe CPU consumption by nearly 13,000 CPU minutes per year.
  • As a result of TCS-led Six Sigma projects, Cummins has realized cost reduction at multiple levels.

Client Quote:

“TCS has been an exemplary partner in Cummins’ efforts to migrate away from the mainframe. I am very pleased with the value TCS has brought to Cummins in the ongoing success points of this project as well as ongoing support for day-to-day processes still running on our mainframe.”
