TransAlta is Canada’s largest publicly traded generator and wholesale marketer of electricity and renewable power. It is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta and operates over 70 facilities spread across Canada, the United States and Australia.
TransAlta’s billing systems were discrete, with non-uniform processes varying with market and operational data. Processes were also adjusted to work with complex underlying contracts.
The lack of standardization led to:
Billing accuracy being driven by the user rather than the process, with the major cause of billing errors being incorrect data
Poor visibility into calculations underlying a particular billing or settlement process. Identification of billing errors was tedious and required the IT team’s assistance
The fragmented systems not being easy to use, being expensive to maintain, and requiring considerable user expertise and time, thereby affecting productivity adversely
TCS helped TransAlta build a robust, easy-to-use and scalable Asset Pool and Billing System (APBS) that helped troubleshoot billing errors, eliminate redundant processes and improve operational efficiencies.
TransAlta now has an integrated Asset Pool and Billing System (APBS) with streamlined processes and accurate data, that is responsible for billing more than 50% of TransAlta’s total revenue and has helped save around 60% effort on change requests.
“TCS’ responsiveness to changes in business requirements has been exceptional. The team scaled up and ramped down according to the situation. This flexibility is key to TransAlta’s success and we will continue to utilize this partnership to sustain the billing system and respond to future requirements." - Nguyen Tran, Director, IT Application
