The second decade of the 21 century brings forth a whole new set of challenges for data center managers. Today, big data centers can consume enough electricity required to light up a small town, causing quite some alarm. There are costs to reduce, carbon caps to worry about and power consumptions to limit.
While data center greening can be handled at different levels, starting from the design of the building to the kind of equipment that is acquired, how much can we do with what we have? Here, we discuss savings within the existing infrastructure in a typical data center and look at the problem of managing and optimizing data center energy and carbon footprints. We consider practical issues while generating a solution framework, identify the main issues faced by IT managers in addressing the problems and outline the contours of a solution approach needed for this.
