WASTE MANAGEMENT

Want Not, Waste Not

TCS generates limited waste thanks to its services focus, and believes in recycling what is generated.

TCS’ waste management practices are centered around reduction in generation, segregation at source, and reuse and recycle wherever possible. Reduction at source is the most important lever, and we are pursuing this by raising awareness and motivating action towards sustainable waste management. While municipal solid waste is the predominant type of waste generated, TCS also generates electronic and electrical waste (e-waste), and a relatively smaller proportion of hazardous waste such as lead-acid batteries and waste lube oil.

In line with the principles of a circular economy, we try to leverage the waste we generate by reusing it in different processes. For instance, biodegradable waste is composted at many locations and we get electricity or biogas in return. Garden waste is composted and the compost generated serves as an excellent bio-fertilizer, which helps TCS avoid the use of chemical fertilizers, and resultant soil and groundwater pollution.

Waste Management Methods:

  • Food and garden waste is composted and/or bio digested and sent to piggeries as feed
  • Hazardous and e-waste is disposed through government-authorized recyclers in compliance with local regulations
  • Paper waste is sent for recycling. Mixed dry waste is sent to scrap dealers or for municipal disposal
  • Printer and toner cartridges are sent back to the manufacturers under product take-back arrangements

Our specific paper consumption has also reduced significantly, thanks to the awareness created among employees. The waste office paper is shredded and recycled. Our e-waste recycling service providers undergo a stringent due-diligence audit process to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environment (HSE)-related regulations. TCS conducts a desktop review as well as a detailed site audit to check if these practices are being followed by suppliers.
