For a successful cloud journey, enterprises need to equip themselves with an appropriate cloud strategy with the right mix of automation, recommends Soumya Chatterjee, Head of Engineering and Consulting, TCS Cloud Applications. To identify the best-fit cloud automation solutions, many enterprises look to automated rule-based decision services for help. The move to the cloud in a simple, successful and secure manner helps achieve innovation, flexibility, scalability, faster time to market and realization of business benefits. Automation throughout the cloud transformation lifecycle is imperative to realize these benefits.

The solutions that make up the TCS Cloud Migration Factory, encompass optimal migration path for applications, technology to service mapping with respect to target cloud while keeping business strategy in focus. This will enable a holistic transformation view and help to select the best-fit cloud model with a comprehensive business case and well-defined industry-specific cloud strategy, roadmap, and operating model.

In the Business 4.0™ world, enterprises need to explore how these unique solutions can provide an intelligent, automated and agile process to achieve the ideal cloud adoption and migration journey.

The experiences of two leading financial entities showcase how the right solutions enabled the automation of key activities and helped in improving the quality and speed of cloud adoption. The first, a large financial service major in the US, opted for simultaneous cloud migration and modernization approach. Over 850 applications were assessed by the unique diagnostic solution and a subset of the applications were found to be best suited for migration as well as modernization. The assessment outcome comprised business case preparation with R factor strategy, move group sequences, timelines based on business priorities, a transparent “per application” migration price and future cloud consumption cost. These enabled a quicker turnaround of six weeks for the assessment outcome.

The second involved a major bank in the same region, where a similar assessment exercise had been executed. The bank was looking to create a cloud strategy, target architecture definition, migration/implementation price, and run costs. The diagnostic solution helped in the simplification of a complex application portfolio. It was powered by pre-built mapping with AI-driven, decision-making ability. The analysis was completed in four weeks and this provided the bank with an efficient and cost-effective charter for cloud adoption.

For cloud migration, enterprises cannot simply adopt a “lift-and-shift” approach. A cloud migration factory is a way forward for enterprises to accelerate their cloud adoption. The factory model with separate assembly lines for different technologies managed by experts, with established processes and automation, is gaining popularity and contributes towards achieving quicker RoI. It is key for enterprises to identify a trusted partner with contextual knowledge, industry-leading processes, solutions and accelerators to support their cloud adoption right from the decision-making step, says Soumya Chatterjee.
