11 things to know about Kochi Generation Z
Kochi, March 08, 2017: Young India is growing up immersed in advanced technology. The TCS Youth Survey is one of the largest studies in the country that captures the Digital habits of children between the age group of 12-18 years. Generation Z (Gen Z) is defined as the group born after 1995 – the current youth generation. Below are some of the technology-related survey results from Kochi.
1. Tech toys gets cooler
While smartphones (29%) and laptops (20%) continue to be the most coveted gadgets for Kochi’s Gen Z, advanced gadgets like gaming consoles & smart watches (13%) followed by virtual reality headsets (12%) are quickly gaining popularity amongst the students in the city.
2. Mediums change, hobbies don’t
Continuing their love for games, technology savvy boys opt for gaming consoles (14%) as the most preferred gadget that they would like to buy. On the other hand, girls in Kochi opted for eBook readers (16%) as the gadget that they would like to buy.
3. Constantly Connected
68% students primarily use internet at home through fixed line/Wi-Fi while 62% of them use access internet through 3G/4G connection on their smartphones. This is an interesting trend observed in Kochi where mobile internet access is so close to fixed line internet access. This is due to the increasing need to be connected wherever one is.
4. Responsible generation
Parents and teachers can now relax as 65% of the respondents use internet for completing school assignments. This was followed by instant messaging (63%) and streaming / downloading music at (61%).
5. Facebook is still the place to be
Kochi teens were found to be simultaneously active on multiple social media platforms. While Facebook (72%) followed by Instagram (38%) continues to be the most popular social media, other platforms like Google Plus (32%), Twitter (25%), Quora (14%) and Snapchat (11%) are also gaining popularity.
The younger generations now look at different social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. to worship their idols. Kochi teens follow film stars (57%) on social media, followed by sports personalities (53%). Another interesting trend observed was Brands’ Facebook Pages being closely followed by (36%) of the respondents.
7. Virtual Friendship
Social media being an important medium for interaction amongst the youth today, there is no surprise in the fact that these sites also play an important role in maintaining friendships. 44% of the teenagers in Kochi have made more than 100 friends through social media sites.
8. This is temporary, we will be back
60% of the teens in Kochi have deleted or deactivated their social media account at least once either due to parental pressure or because they find it a waste of time.
9. Kochi: City of gamers
A lot of the web content is consumed through a wide range of apps available for various purposes. Gaming apps were found to be the most popular (70%) amongst Kochi teens, followed by Instant messaging apps (68%) and Entertainment apps (52%). Shopping (45%) and educational apps (36%) are emerging as the next most popular app choices among the students in the city.
10. Kochi prefer Digital money over Paper money
81% of Kochi youth shop online. Kochi teens prefer usage of parent’s debit/credit card (58%) over cash on delivery (51%) as mode of payment.
11. Born to Lead
Teens in Kochi are highly influenced by technocrats like Bill Gates, APJ Abdul Kalam, Steve Jobs and Sunder Pichai. (74%) of the respondents in Kochi aspire to be entrepreneurs.
