South Point school
A record turnout of teams, a dazzling display of IT awareness and a final that would remain emblazoned in the memories of many, marked the Kolkata edition of TCS IT Wiz 2008. A cloudy, overcast morning was no dampener for over 1200 children who were part of the prelim that comprised of 20 questions from across the world of IT. The prelim led to the top six teams, who were:
St.James School - Vikramjit Ray & Mayukh Bose
Cossipore English - Jitesh & Vandit Shah
MP Birla Foundation - Vaibhav Khaitan & Navonil Mukherjee
Don Bosco (Park Circus) - Kirit Shankar Gupta & Soham Pal
South Point - Anshuman Pal & Vinayak Iyer
Don Bosco (Liluah) - Raunak Sarbajna & Soham Ray
The final began with quizmaster Pickbrain recognizing the performance of a few teams that narrowly missed the final, including a team from Loyola, Jamshedpur that had travelled all the way to be part of the event. As the rounds unfolded, all the teams got into the act and cracked seemingly impossible posers with relative ease. However, it was in the third and fourth rounds of the quiz that the teams from St.James and South Point pushed ahead with truly remarkable answers. In the final round of the quiz, St.James hung on and won the title.
Interestingly, the duo from St.James, were the runner up a year ago and had lost by a razor thin margin of 5 points. When asked by the quizmaster how it feels and what it was like to not win, the team truly reflective of Gen next, said "Well, it was all about losing a laptop".
The guest of honour, star cricketer Deep Dasgupta, distributed the prizes, the laptops to the winners and encouraged the kids to have passion and commitment in whatever they did. He also felt the modern world has good systems to equip them to handle pressure better as compared to his era.
A great day for Kolkata quizzing and surely a day they cannot forget through their lives for St.James.
