TCS CEO Receives CBE; Top British Award for S Ramadorai

Mumbai, India, April 28, 2009: Mr. S Ramadorai, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Tata Consultancy Services, has been awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to Indo-British economic relations. The Award was conferred on Mr Ramadorai in Mumbai by the British Deputy High Commissioner, Western India, Mrs Vicki Treadell.

The CBE is conferred as an acknowledgement of an individual’s exceptional contribution in their field. Mr Ramadorai has been instrumental, since taking over as CEO in 1996, in transforming Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) into a US$6 billion global software company with a geographical reach across 42 countries. Under Mr Ramadorai’s leadership, TCS UK’s estimated turnover has grown to over $1 billion, helping to create over 4200 jobs in the UK. TCS is also an instrumental player in the Tata Group’s role as the largest Indian investor in the UK. Apart from building business in the Great Britain, TCS through its services to UK clients (such as Boots, BT, British Airways, Marks & Spencer, Somerfield, P4U and United Utilities), helps British businesses to deliver certainty of outcomes. TCS also delivers a range of projects and services to a number of British Government institutions, most notably the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission.

Commenting on the award, Mr Ramadorai said, “United Kingdom and India share a special economic, cultural and political relationship that continues to grow and TCS is very proud to have played a role in strengthening these ties. We have been present in the UK for over a quarter of a century and it continues to be a strategic region for TCS for new opportunities and talented professionals.” He added: “I am proud to have been a part of this growth journey and I would like to thank Her Majesty’s office for this great privilege and honour."

Mr Ramadorai is one of India’s most distinguished and decorated corporate leaders, and sits on the boards of several Indian and multinational companies. Amongst the many honours and distinctions conferred on him, Mr Ramadorai was presented, by then UK Prime Minister The Rt. Hon Tony Blair, with the UK Trade & Investment Special Recognition Award in 2005, for TCS’s contribution to India-UK economic ties. He has also played an active part in supporting activities which raise awareness of opportunities for partnerships between Indian and UK industry and academia, for example with the Oxford Said Business School’s Oxford India Forum.

Mr Ramadorai is also a champion of Corporate Social Responsibility. In the course of his CSR interests he has supported the work of The Prince’s Trust “Seeing is Believing” programme in India to share experience and knowledge with UK companies in developing and delivering CSR initiatives and programmes.

About the CBE

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is the order of chivalry of the British democracy. The British Monarch is Sovereign of the Order and appoints all other members of the Order (by convention, on the advice of the British Government).  The Order was created by King George V in 1917, as a new Award of honour, to recognise the efforts of individuals across the world who had assisted Britain during the First World War. For the first time, women and foreigners were included in an order of chivalry. The Order is in the form of a gold badge enameled with pale blue crosses and crimson rings, on a rose-pink ribbon with grey edges, showing the effigies of King George V and Queen Mary. A citation also accompanies the Award.
