TCS to host Global programming contest: CodeVita 2014
MUMBAI, Aug 5, 2014: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, today announced that it is hosting TCS CodeVita, a contest for engineering and science students to experience the joy of coding and to sharpen their programming skills through real-life computing practices. The contest also aims at identifying the talent, besides providing the student community, an opportunity to earn peer recognition. TCS is promoting learning though fun and contests like CodeVita as programming is becoming the skill for future and provide a fast gateway to a technology career.
CodeVita will be held in two phases based on the annual academic calendar. In phase 1, students from Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Australia, South Africa and India can register during July-August. While in phase 2, students from Canada, UK, China, Singapore and Japan can register in October.
CodeVita is a two member team contest and involves three rounds of coding. Each member has to register individually on the CodeVita portal. CodeVita contest supports coding in 7 languages – Java, C#, C, Perl, C++, Python and Ruby.
Ajoy Mukherjee, Executive Vice President said: “Coding is a mind sport. Programming skills helps engineering students to solve complex problems and promotes conceptual thinking as it blends mathematics, logic and alogrithms.”
The contest comprises three rounds:
- Round 1: Programming problem statements
- Round 2: Top 5% of teams from Phase I countries will move into this round
- Grand Finale: Top 15 teams from both Phase 1 and Phase 2 geographies from round 2 will be invited for the Grand Finale. Top 3 teams will be declared winners of the contest
Winning teams will be judged based on accuracy, speed and efficiency. To avoid plagiarism and to promote the best practices, CodeVita this year has introduced the gamification element to differentiate the low, average and high performers based on time element and ranking. Converting a ‘Time advantage’ into a ‘Score advantage’ provides benefits such as using time as a currency to earn scores and thus, gamify problem solving and since time continuously changes, plagiarism will be less effective.
The winners will receive exciting prizes, internship offers with the CTO Team and provisional Offer Letters from TCS.
TCS has been actively involved in engaging students across campuses as part of its Academic Interface Programme. Through “Campus Commune” a dedicated social engagement platform which has over 300,000 student members, TCS encourages learning through discussion and interaction with other students present on the online community, as well as the TCS employees who are open to providing mentorship. The forum is extensively used to spot talent through various engagement programme as well as contests such as CodeVita, Mobeel, Testimony, EngiNX, etc. It is also used as a platform to stay connected with prospective employees throughout the academic life cycle of a student.
