Mumbai, January 2, 2012: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions firm, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mumbai University for the restoration of the iconic Rajabhai Clock Tower and Library building in coordination with Indian Heritage Society, Mumbai.

At a function held at the Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, an MoU was signed by N Chandrasekaran, CEO & MD, TCS, and Dr. Rajan M Welukar, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Mumbai University, in the presence of K Sankaranarayanan, Hon’ble Governor of Maharastra. The event was also attended by S Ramadorai, Vice Chiarman, TCS, S Mahalingam, CFO and ED, TCS, Anita Garware, Chairperson, Indian Heritage Society, and Brinda Somaya, renowned architect.

Speaking on the occasion, N Chandrasekaran said, “The Rajabhai Clock Tower and Library is an iconic architectural landmark of south Mumbai and TCS is proud to work with the Indian Heritage Society to completely restore this heritage structure to its original glory.” He added, “TCS was established in Mumbai and we are committed to preserving Mumbai’s rich heritage, which has a strong historical significance to the city and the nation.”

TCS will fund the project to the tune of Rs 42 million, which includes the restoration of Mumbai library, located at the base of the tower. The objective is to make the conventional library, which houses a collection of rare books, a hi-tech one. The architectural restoration of the library and tower will be undertaken by Brinda Somaya. The make-over plan of the structure will involve strengthening the structure, stone cleaning and consolidation, repairing the damaged parts of the structure, removal of biological growth and upgrading the services.

The Rajabai Clock Tower is located in the confines of the Fort campus of the University of Mumbai. Modelled on the lines of London’s “Big Ben”, the tower stands at a height of 85 m (280 ft). The foundation stone was laid on March 1, 1869 and the construction was completed in November 1878. The Rajabai tower was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, an English architect. The Rajabai Clock Tower reflects the Gothic and Venetian style of architecture.
