10 things to know about Kochi Generation Z
KOCHI, January 7, 2016: The TCS Youth Survey is one of the largest surveys in the country that captures the Digital habits of children between the age group of 12-18 years. Generation Z (Gen Z) is defined as the group born after 1995 – the current youth generation. TCS has been conducting the TCS Youth Survey with students across 15 cities, as part of the TCS IT Wiz Quiz. Below are some of the technology-related survey results from Kochi.
1. Universal Truth: Rise of smart phones
Smartphone has emerged the most preferred digital gadget (79%), alongside Laptop/Home PC (79%).
2. Facebook reigns King of social networking sites among Kochi Gen Z
Facebook leads from the forefront (used by 88%) followed by Google+ (66%).
3. The Blue Canary spreading its wings in Kochi
Twitter is gaining popularity amongst Teen Twitteratis in Kochi with 42% respondents having twitter accounts. Sport stars followed most with 60%.
4. Yo Whatsapp
Whatsapp is by far the most popular instant messaging platform (70%) followed by SMS (11%)
5. Kochi Gen Z says , “see you online”
29% of the respondents spend 15 - 30mins everyday online. 35% of them respond to notifications once a day, followed by within 5 mins of receiving them, (29%). 52% of the online activities are monitored by parents & 48% of the parents have access to Kochi Gen Z online accounts.
6. Learning goes online
While 62% respondents go online to speak with parents/grandparents, an interesting trend is 18% go online to learn a new hobby & 15% go online to do school assignments.
7. No, we are not mobile zombies says Kochi Gen Z
While Kochi Gen Z are more active online and on social networking sites they prefer Face to face communication (42%) as the most preferred way of communication among friends. Phone calls were the next most popular (Boys: 24%; Girls:29%) followed by Social Sites like FB (Boys:12%, Girls: 9%).
8. Brands take a note
82% of the respondents said that they shop online. Buying electronic gadget was most popular (56%) predominantly among boys (59%) & girls (26%). Girls were mostly indulged in buying books (40%) and Clothes (30%).
9. Traditional media remains evergreen Hero
Overall, TV and newspapers were the most used means of consuming news (79%) followed by links from friends/ family on Facebook (43%) and online sources (32%).
10. Just another myth: Professional courses losing charm
Professional course was the highest level of education the school students in Kochi wished to attain ( Boys: 59%, Girls: 59%)
