INNOVATION AT TCS: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF THE POSSIBLE

Responses from more than 1,200 runners across the U.S. revealed that runners have enthusiastically embraced technology since the pandemic. Key survey findings include:

  • One out of every three runners (34%) is using technology more since the pandemic.

  • Adoption rates of running tech, including smart watches, augmented reality devices, smart footwear or socks, and hydration/nutrition apps, jumped an average of 50%.

  • Two out of three respondents (64%) said they would run a ‘bit more’ or ‘significantly more’ if they had access to a range of future running technologies, including smart apparel that automatically adjusts to performance/conditions (75%), skin patches that assess hydration (64%), and bionic limbs or exoskeletons (50%).

Harnessing a culture of innovation

January 19, 2020, saw over 50,000 runners, from India and across the world, participate in Asia’s biggest running event, the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2020 (TMM 2020). A crisp Sunday morning in Mumbai brought together professional athletes, fitness enthusiasts and amateur runners across age groups, with every one racing to push through their own boundaries and accomplish goals unique to each of them.

Whether it was running the entire distance of 42km, clinching the half marathon, hitting an individual milestone with 10K, or participating in the Dream Run (5.9km) category, every participant embodied the spirit and essence of ‘Go Beyond’ – the TCS theme for this year’s run. In addition to this, the Seniors and Champions with Disability race categories brought forth their own stories of inspiration from individuals who steadfastly broke through limitations presented by age or circumstance.

American gymnast and seven-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller flagged off the event as its international ambassador. Commenting on her unique association with TMM 2020, Miller said, “The Tata Mumbai Marathon is about bringing together a community. In a larger sense, what it has done is that it has got people moving, it has got them thinking about fitness. Fitness brings in energy, it enhances productivity, and it enriches life overall.”
