The rise of remote work and digital collaboration tools has blurred the lines between work and personal time. With more employees working on weekends, it is essential for organizations to understand the extent of weekend collaboration occurring among their employees across all the applications / systems and create strategies to promote their disconnection and prioritize self-care activities to improve their wellbeing.
We’ve seen leaders are struggling with the lack of visibility into what is actually happening across their organization. Microsoft’s 2022 Work Trend Index Report indicates that “now is the time for every organization to re-recruit, re-onboard, and re-energize employees” Microsoft Graph Data Connect and TCS takes a novel approach to navigating the challenge in a dynamic, hybrid workplace where there is no one size fits all solution. We’ll explore the extent to which weekend collaboration is eroding the distinction between work and personal time and how it is impacting employee wellbeing score.
The modern work culture is increasingly demanding, and the lines between work and personal life are blurring. The rise of remote work and the gig economy has further exacerbated this trend. While digital collaboration tools making it easier for employees to work beyond regular hour, weekend collaboration has become a common practice among employees, with many taking work home to get ahead or logging in during weekends to catch up on tasks.
Use Case - Understanding weekend work
While working during off-hours may seem like a way to get ahead, research suggests that it can be counterproductive.
A study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies found that working on weekends can negatively impact wellbeing, particularly for those who do not have control over their work schedules.
The study found that the "weekend working" effect was more pronounced for those who worked long hours and had little control over their work schedules. In addition to the negative impact on motivation and wellbeing, working during off-hours can also be detrimental to physical health.Employee Wellbeing directly impacts the Employee happiness and is a critical factor in creating a productive and sustainable work culture.
Organizations that prioritize employee happiness tend to have higher retention rates, increased productivity, and a better overall reputation. As a growing number of employees work on weekends, it's crucial for organizations to recognize the extent of weekend collaboration occurring among their employees and create strategies to promote their disconnection and prioritize self-care activities.
By identifying patterns and trends in employee behaviour during weekends, we can gain insights into how weekend working affects overall employee happiness scores. We can also identify which strategies and interventions are most effective in promoting employee happiness, such as implementing work-life balance policies, offering mental health resources, or providing financial incentives.
Solution Architecture
An architecture for gaining insights into employee weekend work habits could involve the following components:
Overall, this solution architecture would enable organizations to gain a holistic view of employee weekend work habits, identify areas for improvement, and take action to promote employee well-being and work-life balance. By utilizing Microsoft Graph Data Connect and other Azure services, organizations can simplify data integration and processing, enabling more efficient and effective analysis of employee activity data.
Methodology
Working on the weekends often requires employees to use multiple line-of-business (LoB) applications.
In addition to common communication tools such as Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint. To gain insights into how teams connect, communicate, work, and collaborate during weekends, we use Microsoft Graph Data Connectors.
The pre-built connectors and custom connector in Microsoft Graph Data Connect can be used to integrate with a wide range of external applications and services, including HR-related applications. By using these connectors, we extract employee data like employee profile information, work schedules, time-off requests, and other HR-related data along with login activity from various HR-related systems such as Workday, SuccessFactors, and others, using Microsoft Graph Data Connectors. By analysing login activity to various systems, we can understand how frequently employees access work-related systems on weekends.
By correlating and analysing this data from all the systems, we can get a holistic view of the weekend working habits of employees. For example, we can identify employees who work excessively on weekends or who consistently take time off on weekends. We can also identify patterns of work, such as which departments or teams tend to work more on weekends, and which systems or applications are most frequently used on weekends.
These insights can help organizations take action and understand the reality of weekend work, ultimately leading to effective management of a modern workforce and improved work-life balance. By prioritizing employee well-being and implementing strategies that promote disconnection and self-care, organizations can create a more productive and sustainable work culture.
The primary advantage of using Microsoft Graph Data Connectors is that it allows organizations to bring external data into Microsoft Graph, which provides a unified API and data model for accessing data across Microsoft 365 services. This simplifies application development and integration efforts by enabling teams to work with a single API and data model instead of having to integrate with multiple APIs and data sources.
Solution showcase
Weekend collaboration has become increasingly prevalent among employees
After analysing the data collected using Microsoft Graph Data Connector and other tools, it became evident that weekend collaboration has become increasingly prevalent among employees. The analysis reveals a correlation between weekend collaboration and higher levels of employee burnout and stress. In addition to the correlation between weekend collaboration and employee burnout and stress, the analysis also reveals a negative impact on employee wellness and happiness scores.
Employees who engage in weekend collaboration report more significant levels of burnout and stress than those who maintain a clear boundary between work and personal time. Furthermore, employees who engage in weekend collaboration report lower wellness scores, including poorer physical and mental health, reduced social connectedness, and lower engagement levels. Similarly, employees who engage in weekend collaboration report lower happiness scores, indicating a reduced sense of fulfilment and purpose in their work.
These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing employee well-being and implementing strategies that promote work-life balance. By monitoring and tracking employee wellness and happiness scores, organizations can gain deeper insights into the impact of work-related activities on employee well-being and take appropriate action to mitigate any negative effects. Through the implementation of wellness programs, training initiatives, and other well-being interventions, organizations can create a supportive and sustainable work environment that promotes employee health, happiness, and productivity.
Conclusion
It is also important for organizations to recognize the negative impact of weekend collaboration on employee wellbeing and productivity.
The results suggest that there is a need to address the root causes of weekend collaboration, such as excessive workloads, unclear expectations, and poor time management. To address these issues, organizations can provide employees with training and resources to manage their workload effectively, set clear expectations about when and how employees should work, and encourage them to take breaks and disconnect from work during their personal time.
