One of the biggest challenges in India is ensuring access to quality jobs for youth from socio-economically and geographically disadvantaged communities. TCS Youth Employment Program (YEP) addresses this challenge by equipping undergraduate students and unemployed graduates from disadvantaged rural communities with marketable skills, valuable certifications, and industry-relevant credentials.
Upskilling youth to thrive in the digital economy
The high unemployment rate among the youth, particularly from marginalized communities, is a pressing challenge in modern India. Limited opportunities, minimal access to quality education, inadequate communication skills, and a lack of technical expertise hinder youth employment prospects and their ability to thrive in the digital economy.
YEP tackles this issue through its transformative “Teach, Coach, Mentor, and Place” model. The program aims at upskilling youth from marginalized communities across the country by making them industry-ready and supporting them with placement opportunities. YEP enables the transition of youth (with engineering and non-engineering backgrounds) from college to careers in the digital economy.
YEP collaborates with industry leaders and subject-matter experts to deliver comprehensive training on business communication, aptitude, computer programming, and domain-specific skills. The program bridges the gap between academic and professional worlds, empowering youth to enhance their socio-economic standing. Through career guidance, mentoring, access to market-relevant certifications, and real-time project exposure, the program enhances the skills of graduates to excel in India’s competitive job market.
Enabling meaningful employment
Since its inception, the program empowered its beneficiaries in India to secure meaningful employment by creating specific career paths for them in hospitality, banking, retail, and IT domains, to name a few.
YEP also enables the continuous availability of a highly skilled talent pool for the industry and enhances the reputation and visibility of partner institutions.
TCS has partnered with the Government of India (GoI) on a nation-building exercise to empower unemployed youth through the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS). PMIS is an initiative to provide internship opportunities to youth in India's top companies. It aims to equip youth with hands-on experience, industry exposure, and in-demand skills, enabling them to land opportunities across industry sectors.
The interns experience a structured 12-month internship program, comprising four months of intensive soft skills training, followed by eight months of on-the-job learning, leading to their eventual integration of into the workforce. For the soft skills phase, a specially curated program called SAFAL (Sashaktikaran, Aatmanirbharta, Falta, Avsar, Lakshya), an extension of YEP, has been implemented to train the PMIS interns.
