Partha Dhar and Pranava Dhar of DPS Noida, walked away with the coveted Trophy at the National finals of TCS IT Wiz, the biggest inter-school IT quiz in India. The Finals witnessed a strongly contested participation from eight outstanding teams from 8 cities battling for the championship title at the grand finale. The National Finals was held in Mumbai on, December 11, 2016 at Taj Lands End, organised by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions. The competition this year witnessed participation at the regional level from nearly 15,000 students of classes 8-12 from 1,328 schools across India.
The TCS IT Wiz Regional editions were held this year between August - November, across 15 locations in India – Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Visakhapatnam. These 15 teams contested their way through two rounds of semi-finals consisting of 7 and 8 teams each to reach the Grand Finale.
Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, CEO & MD, TCS who distributed the prizes stated, “The TCS IT Wiz is becoming increasingly dynamic each year. It is invigorating to witness the resilient spirit of young students battling for the coveted title of National Champions. Our country’s talent pool in technology is undoubtedly extensive, which makes the future of IT promising.” He further added,“TCS IT Wiz is an innovative gamification concept which serves as a unique platform for learning and recognition of some of the finest technology buffs from various schools.”
At the end of five rounds of quizzing, Partha Dhar and Pranava Dhar of Delhi Public School, Noida emerged as the National Champions. They walked away with a Microsoft Surface each along gold medals, 1 TB Hard Disk and a power bank and the trophy for the school.
The first runners up Arjun Sunil and Nandu Krishnan S from Navy Children School who won the finals at Kochi regionals walked away with a MacBook Air as the grand prize, a silver medal, 1 TB Hard Disk and a power bank as prizes, along with a trophy for the school.
The second runners up Hardik Pathak and Nischay Shopurkar from Delhi Public School, who won the finals at Indore regionals walked away with an iPhone each along with a bronze medal, 1 TB Hard Disk and a power bank as prizes, along with a trophy for the school.
The finale was hosted by noted quizmaster Giri 'Pickbrain' Balasubramanium who presented the quiz through gamification rounds, developed by using animation software that kept the audience and the teams at the edge of their seats.
As a part of ‘Meet the Leader’ programme all 30 Finalists met Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, CEO & MD, TCS and had a freewheeling discussion.
The questions for the quiz, as always were interesting and well researched. Some of them included referencing ‘Splinternet’ – The concept of segmenting the internet, ‘Foreign Fued’ – An app to cure Wastapp addiction, ‘ATM Jackpotting’ – The process of releasing a malware in a bank’s central server that causes the ATM to dispense cash and ‘Rumblr’ – An app used to arrange fights.
Tweeporting: There was a Twitter contest during the National finals and the top 5 highest tweets won prizes besides the best “tweet of the day.” The national finals witnessed as many as 9058 tweets.
For the first time in the history of Indian quizzing, TCS IT Wiz National Finals introduced “real time scoring” which enabled the audience to keep a track of the close competition.
Social Media Highlights
• Total tweets using the hashtag #TCSITWiz from August-December 2016: 1,35,000 with 1900 contributors to the hashtag
• 32% spike in tweets as compared to 2015- reached 14 million over 5 months
• #TCSITWiz consistently trended during Tier II city rounds
• Lucknow with 20,150 tweets and Delhi with 14,318 emerged as the top 2 cities • 28% increase in Twitter followers (from 6033 to 7702) • 82% increase in Facebook followers ( from 21208 to 38693)
