The carbon footprint of an organization can be divided into Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 of carbon emissions. These Scopes follow the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol generally used in ESG reporting.
Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions while Scope 2 and Scope 3 are indirect emissions.
- Scope 1 emissions occur from sources owned or controlled by a company.
- Scope 2 emissions are supply-chain emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat or cooling and are a result of the organization's energy use..
- Scope 3 emissions are all other supply-chain emissions.
