Don led the union at the state and national level, overseeing the introduction of the 38-hour week and universal superannuation for retail workers.

Read more About Robert de Castella MBEBorn in 1957 in Melbourne, Robert de Castella, or ‘Deek’ as his is more commonly known, is Australia’s greatest ever marathon runner. de Castella set the world record for the marathon in 1982; became Australia’s first track and field World Champion in 1983; won two Commonwealth Games gold medals in 1982 and 1986 and dominated the event worldwide for most of the 1980’s.
From 1990 to 1995, de Castella was director of the Australian Institute of Sport. His passion and dedication for encouraging healthy living for children and adults saw his established his SmartStart for Kids program in 1999; a program that aims to address the high inactivity levels in ACT primary schools. The program currently operates in 21 schools throughout the ACT.
In 2003, de Castella joined forces with Bill Giles to develop the Deeks concept, as a way of providing a healthy alternative to grain-based products, and in 2006, ‘Deeks Health Bakery’, a specialist chain of grain and gluten free bakeries and cafes was launched in Canberra.
More recently in 2009, de Castella was approached by a Sydney based production agency to produce a documentary capturing the journey of four young Indigenous men on their path to becoming the first Indigenous Australians to run in the New York City Marathon. In 2011, the first ever team of Indigenous women took part in, and finished the New York Marathon. Since its inception, de Castella has mentored 100’s of Indigenous athletes through various marathons across the globe including New York, Boston and Tokyo.
The project uses running to change lives. The core running squad push their physical and mental boundaries to a whole new level, and after crossing the finish line of the biggest marathon in the world they know they can achieve anything. These runners are trained to become healthy lifestyle leaders by completing a Certificate IV in Indigenous Leadership and Health Promotion.
