For more than a decade, TCS has leveraged advanced technology to help JLR accelerate their electrification journey. Today, TCS also uses technology to help Jaguar TCS Racing win races. Formula E is a testbed of innovation for the technology transforming the electric vehicle (EV) market.

The TCS and Jaguar TCS Racing partnership is an example of moving beyond traditional sports sponsorship – we’re driving sustainability forward and leveraging the excitement of racing to inspire the next generation of business leaders, sustainability experts, computer scientists and engineers.

Jaguar TCS Racing needs to find performance gains before they ever hit the track. The answer? A digital twin. Every torque adjustment, every software update – tested, refined, perfected in the digital world first. But a digital twin is only as good as its data. That’s where TCS steps in.

With Formula E races often taking place on temporary street circuits and with tight regulations, Jaguar TCS Racing can’t often practice on physical circuits or run in-person tests. Regardless, teams must still find ways develop top performing cars. We set out to help solve this challenge by enhancing the team’s digital twin technology so that it can run more simulations, generate more data, and validate software code.

TCS’s automotive data science team developed a mathematical model, called the Virtual Vehicle Validation Model (V3M), which instructs the digital twin of the Jaguar I-TYPE 7 on how to navigate a track based on various inputs. The V3M runs continuous simulations without a person in the simulator and rapidly and robustly validates changes to developmental software in digital twin models.

Running the V3M saves Jaguar TCS Racing engineers critical time during race preparation. Teams can make changes to the vehicle software right up to the very last moment in pursuit of performance gains. Having confidence that the simulator results are accurate enables the team to unlock creativity and innovation elsewhere, allowing them to stay perpetually adaptive.

Advancements in predictive data analytics and AI help Jaguar TCS Racing find data-driven insights that can impact performance. Energy management strategies, optimal vehicle set ups, and future car development are just three examples.

Data feeds Jaguar TCS Racing's digital twins, helping the team virtually replicate the race car as well as gain insights into car set up changes and race strategy adjustments.

With the support of the V3M, Jaguar TCS Racing can count on accurate and reliable data insights through simulation.

Technological advancements being developed and tested on the racetrack often make their way to the consumer market, making driving safer, more enjoyable, and sustainable. The future of mobility is tailored, hyper-personalized experiences and product customization.

Mobility is becoming more intelligent, with the automotive industry at the forefront of this transformation. As the role of software in mobility grows with vehicles rapidly adopting Software Defined models predominantly managed through software and a data-driven approach.

Generative AI enhances AV research and development by allowing TCS scientists to explore various real-world scenarios in our labs. For example, we can simulate and test how a vehicle responds to diverse conditions from navigating snow to handling heavy rains or waterlogging. This flexibility enables us to test vehicle performance in countless scenarios, training AVs to operate safely while facing a range of challenges.

Jaguar TCS Racing’s participation in Formula E is accelerating research and innovation in electric mobility. This could have a profoundly positive impact on climate change while improving urban health with better air quality, road safety, and connected mobility.

Our approach to sustainability is more than just electrification of automobile industry. The GEN3 Evo Jaguar car is based on Life Cycle Thinking with a clear path towards second life and end of life for all tires, auto body parts, and battery cell components. 

Overall, Formula E — the world’s first net zero motorsport since inception — demonstrates that sustainable driving experiences can be achieved without sacrificing automotive performance. This is true on the racetrack and the highway.

Ignite My Future is TCS’ pioneering effort to empower educators around the world with resources that help them integrate computational thinking into core subjects like math, science, literacy, social studies, and the arts.
