If 5G was about connecting everything, 6G is about making the network “intelligent”—an AI-native fabric that finally moves telcos from “pipes” to partners in business outcomes.
HFS Research and TCS recently partnered on a Market Impact Report that describes the significant impact 6G will have as the architecture for the AI era. While conversation around 6G often centers around technical specifications, the real opportunities will come from unlocking new value creation. As 6G approaches its go-live moment in the next few years, it will provide an optimal architecture for automated optimization, node-level service delivery, and enhanced customer experiences.
These unlocked outcomes will drive investment in new technologies, services, and revenue streams, helping increase annual revenue per user (ARPU) across customers, devices, and services and enabling operators to provide hyper-personalized services. The key point: don’t just focus on 6G-vs-5G specs; focus on what those specs unlock commercially.
Transforming services, ways of working, and experiences
From a technical perspective, 6G specifications are impressive: peak throughput is expected to rise to ~50–200 Gb/s, with sub-millisecond latency and tighter determinism, higher reliability ambitions, and centimeter-grade positioning with RF sensing. The outcomes are equally impressive from a business perspective, providing the ability to turn multi-camera UHD uplink, real-time digital twins, tele-operation, and “location-as-a-service” into monetizable products, not science projects. This also signals a new coverage fabric, integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (LEO/HAPS) while embedding stronger security, resilience, and sustainability into the stack. (Exhibit 1)
The real transformation is value creation through convergence: cloud + data + wireless + AI combine into context-rich networks that can sell situational awareness, real-time assurance, immersive experiences, and operational insights. For enterprises, 6G’s ultra-dense, low-energy connectivity—including concepts like battery-free/ambient IoT—expands asset tracking, telemetry, and auditability while opening fresh operator revenue streams.
6G is also the runway for what’s next: services-as-software, agentic AI, satellite integration, XR/spatial computing, autonomous transport, global digital twins, and quantum-as-a-service—each raising the bar for assured capacity and orchestration.
Realizing 6G’s promise
Developing your 6G roadmap involves new partnerships, industry-focused solutions, and frameworks for additional revenue. Think of 6G as an AI supply chain. Winning carriers will productize “intent”—turning business goals into network policies, closed-loop assurance, and outcome-linked pricing—so customers buy certainty (latency, resilience, compliance), not bandwidth.
That’s why the roadmap is really a partner strategy: Align to IMT-2030, co-develop vertical use cases, invest in Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) and hyperscaler APIs, and build testing labs for Joint Communications and Sensing (JCAS), new spectrum ranges, and automation
The bottom line is blunt: go all-in—or watch competitors claim the premium experience tiers and new ARPU first.
