As we stand at the threshold of a new era in higher education, I am pleased to announce the launch of the TCS Higher Education Study: Digital Readiness and Student Experience. This comprehensive report includes a foreword from Lucinda Parr, Chief Operating Officer and Registrar at the University of Bristol, one of the most popular and successful universities in the UK, ranked 51st in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2026. This report offers an in-depth, unbiased look at the overall health of universities, digital student experiences, and their technology investment priorities. It provides fresh insights about how universities in the US, UK, and Australia are navigating the complex landscape of AI, digital transformation, increasing student expectations, and institutional resilience.
Digital transformation is key to long-term institutional growth.
Our research, based on a survey of 200 senior leaders from large institutions across the US, UK, and Australia, reveals a sector that is both optimistic and realistic. Enrollments have been steadily increasing for the majority of universities. And nearly 80% of university leaders express confidence in long-term growth, even as they face persistent challenges around financial resources, alumni engagement, and regulatory demands. Modernisation is recognised as essential for institutional longevity, with higher education leaders highlighting digital transformation as both a top three driver of growth and a strategic priority for 2026-2027.
Technology challenges facing higher education
Nearly two-thirds (66%) of our education leaders recognise they are behind in technology adoption, ranking digital maturity as “evolving” or “basic.” Only 35% say technology is a core enabler to organizational responsiveness, suggesting there is significant room for improvement here.
Student experience takes center stage
The study highlights a shift from traditional academic metrics to a more student-centered approach. Universities ranked their inability to meet increasing student expectations #5 out of 13 options as a key factor shaping organizational direction. And “student experience” stands out as a top strategic priority, following academics, research, and digital transformation. The biggest digital pain points impacting student experiences are fragmented ecosystems that add complexity to administrative processes and digital equity and accessibility challenges.
Investments in the right technologies is crucial.
The gap between aspiration and execution is real, but so is the sector’s willingness to invest in new technologies and reimagine the student experience.
29% of IT budgets are now dedicated to digital student experience initiatives, with AI and machine learning topping the list of investment priorities for the next two years. Universities that harness these technologies will become more agile, able to pivot quickly in response to a dynamic environment.
