Takeda delivers quality at speed with next-gen IT testing
TCS builds an industry-standard testing center of excellence equipped with modern tools and technologies.
Highlights
Overview
Takeda Pharmaceuticals is committed to delivering innovative and transformative health solutions, better health for people, and a brighter future for the world.
A purpose-led and values-based organization, Takeda has a strong IT backbone, which it constantly reinforces with technological advancements and upgrades. This allows the pharma major to continue discovering and delivering life-transforming treatments, guided by its commitment to patients, people, and the planet. But as with any other organization today, business expectations rise rapidly, and the response time shrinks. The answer lies in an ultra-modern IT environment for the business to focus wholly on innovation and value creation. Recognizing this, Takeda sought to modernize IT testing with advanced tools and a digital governance framework.
Objectives
The fundamental goal was for Takeda to establish a single governance framework.
Following the company’s acquisition of Shire Pharmaceuticals, establishing the governance framework would require seamless integration of both companies’ CoEs.
Solution
TCS has been part of several of the pharma major’s enterprise-level digital transformation programs.
TCS used its extensive industry expertise and ran a complete assessment of testing maturity across the global teams at Takeda. The TCS team assessed the existing testing frameworks and identified the pain points and focus areas for immediate and long-term improvements. This was followed by the implementation of TCS’ Global Network Delivery Model™, the standardization of testing processes, and the adoption of electronic testing methods.
TCS implemented a comprehensive testing framework that takes into account a variety of metrics and enables a 360-degree strategy for automating GxP and non-GxP applications. TCS also worked on validation and quality assurance aspects to enhance and standardize Takeda’s end-to-end software development life cycle (SDLC) processes.
To ensure seamless integration of Takeda’s and Shire’s testing COEs, TCS evaluated their testing tools and processes in isolation, conducted extensive ROI analysis, and arrived at a strategy that would eliminate wastage across the testing landscape and enable a global testing ecosystem aligned to the existing and future SDLC requirements. TCS also supported the integration of ERP platforms and manufacturing systems of the two companies across the 68 countries they have a presence in.
TCS quickly adapted to the shifting workplace requirements and rapidly deployed the Location-independent Agile™ Delivery Model, wherein the entire workforce worked remotely, distributed, and connected. TCS created a pool of collective knowledge using its Contextual-Masters™ ecosystem.
Benefits
An integrated, ultra-modern testing CoE allows Takeda to drive quality at speed.
TCS deployed a dedicated team comprising test architects, engineers, and quality testers, as well as a DevOps-ready ecosystem of solution accelerators, third-party solutions for non-functional testing, and shift-left automation tools to create a truly modern testing CoE at Takeda.
With a transformed IT landscape and redefined testing services, the pharma major has realized the following benefits:
Improved user experience for over 4,000 IT and business users
Around 33% reduction in the overall cost of quality while maintaining a record 98.2% defect containment rate
More than 50 opportunities were identified for test automation, yielding an ROI of over $3.4 million
Nearly 33% cycle time reduction during each testing round due to the automation (close to 80%) of the ERP regression suite
Accelerated drug development and faster time-to-market given the reduction in software testing life cycle
