- Located in Monterey, California, and operated by the United States Navy, the Naval Postgraduate School offers defense-focused graduate education and the ability to conduct classified, interdisciplinary research.
- Students at this prestigious institution wanted a way to know what research had been done and was being done in its various departments. They sought a unified view of current and completed research. This would enable them to build on available work, thereby improving research outcomes.
- The Naval Postgraduate School, in partnership with TCS, worked with various stakeholders to build a collaborative research tool – Athena for Partners – which connects users across NPS, industry, and academia, allowing them to securely exchange information, explore research, and expand collaboration.

The Naval Postgraduate School is a premier postgraduate institution for the United States Department of Defense, where active-duty marines, sailors, soldiers, airmen, and guardians, international partners, and DOD civilians, come together for education, applied research, and experimentation.
Like many universities, NPS is organized into academic departments dedicated to various STEM and defense-related disciplines from operations research and computer science to national security affairs and defense analysis. Traditionally, research and data have been confined within these departments. Recognizing that most innovation happens at the gap in the seams between such silos, the Naval Postgraduate School embarked on a transformative journey.
To enable students to have a unified view of current and completed research across departments, the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation partnered with TCS to build Athena for Partners – a collaborative research tool that serves as a repository of completed, ongoing, and needed research, It shows the interconnections between the departments and fields, and allows seamless data flow between users in a secure environment.
Users at the Naval Postgraduate School and across industry, DOD, and academic partners now use Athena to not only discover topics and the research that has already been done, but also to see and connect with all the users that are actively doing research in those areas. This has helped create a cohesive ecosystem where the community thrives on interactions among members.
