Large energy consumers are investing in onsite generation, storage, and electrification, but disconnected assets do not automatically create enterprise value. An energy intelligence layer connects asset telemetry, consumption, generation, and storage data with market and pricing signals. It then applies forecasting, analytics, and optimisation to support coordinated decisions in real time. This International Data Corporation(IDC) analyst brief explains why that orchestration capability is becoming essential as energy portfolios grow more distributed, intermittent, and complex.
Energy security, cost volatility, electrification, and climate commitments are converging. IDC reports that 84% of large energy consumers plan to increase energy-transition investment over the next 24 months, with nearly one-third expecting increases above 10%. At the same time, solar PV costs have fallen sharply since 2010 and battery-storage pack prices fell to $70/kWh in 2025, making integrated generation-and-storage models more viable. Yet value is constrained when energy data remains fragmented across building management systems, energy management systems, Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) environments, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, smart meters, and market feeds. Enterprises need a decision layer that can anticipate conditions and coordinate assets across locations.
To build an effective energy intelligence foundation, organizations should focus on four key capabilities:
IDC describes the value of energy intelligence as a compounding set of capabilities. First, real-time visibility and dynamic rebalancing can strengthen operational resilience. Second, forecasting and optimisation can help an enterprise act as a prosumer by deciding when to consume, store, discharge, or potentially sell energy. Third, continuous optimisation of energy timing, source, and volume can improve cost performance and produce the data needed to demonstrate return on energy-transition investments.
According to the report, TCS has an opportunity to help large energy consumers close the intelligence gap through its combination of digital and engineering capabilities, proprietary platforms, and an ecosystem-led approach. The report also notes that IDC positioned TCS in the Leaders category in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Energy Transition Professional Services 2025 Vendor Assessment.
The next stage of energy transition value will come from coordinating portfolios, not simply adding more assets. Enterprises that establish an intelligence layer can move from fragmented monitoring toward continuous, data-led optimisation across cost, resilience, and market participation.
