Pune, January 8, 2016: The TCS Youth Survey is one of the largest surveys in the country that captures the Digital habits of High School students between the age group of 12-18 years. Generation Z (Gen Z) is defined as the group born after 1995 – the current youth generation. TCS has been conducting the TCS Youth Survey with high school students across 15 cities in India, as part of the TCS IT Wiz Quiz. Below are some of the technology-related survey results from Pune.
1. The Smart Phones generation
Smartphones are the most coveted electronic gadget (85%) amongst Pune teens. However, it is interesting to note that Desktops/ home PCs and laptops (48%) are the most popular mode of accessing the internet followed by smart phones (38%).
2. Pune teens check in as Facebook Socialites
Facebook leads from the forefront (used by 81%) followed by Google+ (used by 73%). An interesting observation was that Google+ was more popular among the Gen Z Pune girls (used by 72%) as against Facebook (used by 64%).
3. The Blue Canary spreads its wings in Pune
Twitter is quite popular amongst Teen Twitteratis in Pune with 30% respondents having twitter accounts. Higher proportion of boys (62%) than girls (44%) followed sports personalities on Twitter.
4. What’s up Whatsapp?
Whatsapp is by far the most popular instant messaging platform (74%) used by Pune Gen Z. It is distantly followed by Google Hangouts (11%).
5. Pune Gen Z says, “see you online”
32% of the respondents spend at least half an hour everyday online. 37% of them respond to notifications once a day and 23% respond within 5 minutes of receiving them. 46% of the respondents online activities are monitored by parents and 50% of the respondents' parents have access to their online accounts.
6. Anytime, Anywhere Learning
An interesting trend seen amongst Pune teens is to break-free from organized learning environment and move towards the online learning space indicating the popularity that DIY and collaborative learning is gaining. 23% of the respondents use video chat to learn a new hobby & 20% go online to do school assignments.
7. Pune Gen Z says, “Meet and Greet; NOT Post and Tweet”
Face to face communication is still the most preferred way of communication with friends (50%) as compared to phone calls and social media.
8. Brands take a note: Gen Z are accomplished multi-channel shoppers
90% of the respondents said that they shop online. Electronic gadgets (64%) were the most popular buy for Gen Z closely followed by Books (61%) and Movie/exhibition/event tickets (44%).
9. Traditional media still the King
Overall, TV and newspapers were the most used means of consuming news (85%) followed by links from friends/ family on Facebook and online sources.
10. Just another myth: Professional courses losing charm
Interestingly a higher percentage of girls (52%) as compared to boys (42%) wished to pursue professional courses.
