Highlights

  • TCS created a digital innovation center for TotalEnergies, in Pune, India, to improve the oil and gas major's industrial efficiency and energy performance.
  • Real-time data analytics, Internet of Things, automation, artificial intelligence, and agile methodology are some of the technologies being explored.
  • The center, which started with a focus on the refinery business, has now extended its scope to exploration-production, renewable gas, and power.

As digital technology upends every sector, how does an industry that is widely considered to be relatively less advanced digitally respond? How does an oil major reinvent itself to champion the building of a sustainable future?

These are key challenges that TCS is addressing at the digital innovation center created for global integrated energy producer TotalEnergies.

Based in Pune, India, the center is pioneering disruptive technologies and solutions, to bring about a cleaner energy future, faster. Real-time data analytics, the Internet of Things, automation, artificial intelligence and agile methodology are being explored to improve industrial efficiency and energy performance.

With an initial focus on refining, the TCS and TotalEnergies partnership is implementing the use of digital technologies to advance collective knowledge and help drive the various building blocks of refining –production units, processes, and the supply chain and petroleum product markets – to improve refinery performance and move toward sustainability in the oil and gas industry.

The center has been established on the basis of TCS’ belief that innovation unfolds best when there is shared knowledge and collaboration. The ‘entrepreneurship-in-residence’ model means TotalEnergies works with TCS’ technology and domains experts, with TCS bringing to its customer its know-how in structured co-innovation approaches.

Even as the innovation center started with a focus on the refinery business, its scope has extended to other branches and allied businesses such as exploration-production, renewable gas, and power.

“We now want to invent the digital solutions of tomorrow by combining TotalEnergies’ know-how with the agility of TCS,” says Marie-Noëlle Semeria, Senior Vice President and Group Chief Technology Officer at Total. Added Bernard Pinatel, President – Refining and Chemicals, Total. “We want to invent Refinery 4.0,” she adds.

Backed by continuous innovation and a strong focus on the emerging technology landscape, TCS is well equipped to partner with TotalEnergies to realize the sustainability goal of producing clean energy to meet the world’s current and future demand.
