Mel V Velarde is the chairman and CEO of NOW Telecom. He is also the chairman of the board of directors, NOW Corporation. NOW Telecom, formerly Nextel Communications Philippines Inc. (NCPI), is a telecommunications service license holder in the Philippines, with nationwide congressional franchise (RA 10972), valid until 2043. Mel, with his multinational team, negotiated with Nextel International Inc. (NII), based in Virginia, USA, and engineered the buy-out of NCPI, a $250 million investment of NII.
NOW Telecom is one among four mobile telephony system license holders (the others being SMART-PLDT, Globe Telecom, and Dito Telecommunity). The company has the license to construct, establish, operate, and maintain mobile telecommunications systems, fixed wireless telecommunications systems, international and domestic gateways, fibre optic systems, satellite systems, electronic communications networks, and electronic communications services.
In a significant development in November 2022, the US Government recognized NOW Telecom, an affiliate of NOW Corp, as its partner in deploying 5G technologies and establishing a secure nationwide broadband network across the Philippines. It is the prime mover of the Trusted Network Alliance for the Indo-Pacific region.
Prior to NOW Telecom, Mel was chairman, Velarde Inc.; founder of NowPlanet.TV; chairman, News and Entertainment Network Corporation; News Director, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Company (1988); and co-founder, executive vice president, and general manager, Sky Cable, in the Philippines.
Mel is also chairman of the board of trustees, Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, was the Philippine Commissioner to UNESCO (2003-2010), and was the chairman of the UNESCO Philippine Science and Technology Committee
