Leveraging Technology for Social Good
TCS’ impact reaches the farthest corners of India. Prioritising the most fundamental needs of the underrepresented and underserved communities, TCS collaborates with government and non-governmental organizations to give wings to millions of dreams.
TCS is using AI-powered tools to help reduce school dropout rates with clean toilets at public schools. Around 1,400 women entrepreneurs from socially marginalized backgrounds are being empowered through the Bridge IT program. From providing literacy to upskilling marginalised communities, TCS is making headway in strengthening India’s backbone.
1.Using AI to ensure better sanitation
One Clean Toilet at a Time
Globally, 10% of diseases are linked to inadequate sanitation, causing an annual economic loss of $260 billion. In India, poor sanitation contributes to 23% of girls dropping out of school, undermining the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Recognizing this problem, TCS worked with the state of Andhra Pradesh to improve sanitation standards in 45,000 government-run schools statewide. TCS’ automated solution processes photographs of sanitation components such as commodes, urinals, and wash basins to determine their condition and alert the sanitation staff, processing up to five lakh images daily. The solution achieves an accuracy of about 95% and integrates fraud detection, adhering to ethical AI principles.

Empowering Lives Through Literacy
TCS Literacy as a Service (LaaS) promotes social inclusion and transforms lives through literacy. Launched in 2000 LaaS has empowered over 2.61 million learners and 241,740 facilitators. In FY25, LaaS empowered 412,216 learners. This digital literacy platform offers training, videos, assessments and digital certificates along with financial literacy, digital literacy, awareness of key citizen entitlements, and disaster risk reduction (DRR) literacy in nine Indian languages and three foreign languages and has over 460 volunteers.
The ‘Each One Empowers One’ initiative gives employees of TCS and other Tata Group companies an opportunity to volunteer and empower those in their community.
Let’s go to Palli Village in Puri, Odisha where we bring you the story of Prabhasini Baral's journey to financial Independence. Starting with the basics, learning the alphabet and arithmetic, she discovered the power of knowledge beyond literacy, learning about disaster preparedness and the importance of essential documents. Prabhasini applied for the Subhadra Yojana scheme, she purchased a cow, earning a steady income by selling milk in her village, turning a simple resource into a sustainable livelihood.

TCS’ BridgeIT™ program focuses on equipping marginalised communities with digital skills and business literacy to support community innovation and create successful digital entrepreneurs.
Since inception it has created 1,866 entrepreneurs of which 1,712 are active comprising of 88% women and 52% from marginalized communities: serving 744,697 villagers in 4,457 villages across 42 districts in India. In FY25, BridgeIT's latest project onboarded 1,400 women from 14 districts across the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Rajasthan with 1,364 of them successfully launching their enterprises serving the last mile needs.
One such story is of Priyanka Devi from Dumra village, Dhanbad District, Jharkhand. She faced financial struggles before discovering TCS BridgeIT. Equipped with training and resources from BridgeIT, she started her entrepreneurial journey with the laptop given and invested in a printer to start serving her community. She started by offering essential digital services. With continuous support from online training sessions, mentoring, and the digital handbook, she gradually expanded her services to include cash withdrawals, a high demand service in her village. With resilience and dedication, she continues to grow her business, proving that the right opportunities can transform lives.
