TCS supports Vodafone Germany’s OSS Evolution journey to modernise network management systems across domains.
Vodafone Germany’s OSS Evolution programme focuses on modernising end-to-end network management systems across element management, probing and service assurance. It spans mobile, fixed, cable and TV domains and supports both RUN and CHANGE functions, helping to protect stable service delivery while enabling platform transformation.
The OSS Engineering team transformed a legacy, unsupported monitoring ecosystem into a secure, scalable and highly available platform by upgrading DX NetOps Spectrum, modernising the underlying operating system and strengthening the virtualisation layer.
Vodafone Germany needed to address security, stability, performance and capacity risks in a highly integrated OSS landscape.
The legacy environment created significant operational and technical risk. Unsupported application stacks, legacy operating systems and outdated authentication mechanisms exposed the ecosystem to security vulnerabilities. Stability issues included recurring crashes across 8 to 10 servers and vCenter instability caused by overload and overprovisioning.
Performance was also impacted, with polling delays extending up to two hours against an expected five-minute interval. The infrastructure had reached full utilisation, Mobile landscapes lacked high availability and operations depended heavily on custom scripts, creating false alarms and escalation pressure.
TCS helped execute a comprehensive modernisation of the OSS stack across a large, multi-domain and highly integrated environment.
The modernisation upgraded DX NetOps Spectrum from version 10.3.1 to 24.3.1, strengthening performance, security and Broadcom support. DX NetOps Performance Management and supporting applications also moved to version 24.3.1. Operating systems were modernised to RHEL 9.x and upgraded VMware ESXi to 8.x.
High availability was enabled for mobile landscapes to improve resilience and reduce outage risk. Execution was carefully controlled across an ecosystem of more than 140 servers with multiple northbound interface (NBI) and southbound interface (SBI) connections, custom modules, enterprise customer integrations and extensive cross-system dependencies.
The modernisation strengthened security, stability, vendor support and scalability while minimising service disruption.
The upgrade eliminated end-of-life risk by moving core components to supported versions and restored full vendor support across Spectrum, CA Performance Management and the virtualisation stack. The platform gained stronger encryption and authentication, stable infrastructure with no recurring crashes, five-minute polling intervals and maintenance recovery within 10 to 15 minutes.
Operational efficiency improved through fewer false alarms and less manual intervention, while five new landscapes expanded the infrastructure to support future growth. The transition was delivered with minimal service disruption; the observed issues were primarily linked to VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) activity and were proactively mitigated.
