Rail Delivery Group builds a platform to monetize data
The Rail Delivery Group sits at the heart of the rail industry in the UK.
It is a member-owned organization, working with passenger and freight train operators to create a simpler, better railway.
In 2021, it embarked on a journey to transform how data was used by the UK rail industry. While lots of data was available, it was often siloed within different organizations and hard to access efficiently, stifling innovation across the industry.
With TCS’ support, the Rail Delivery Group brought many fragmented sources of information into one digital service—the Rail Data Marketplace. The platform provides the ability for organizations across the rail industry to publish data either as open data or publishers can choose to monetize its use. It was built using TCS Dexam™, a data exchange and marketplace platform, allowing users to find and have ‘one-click’ access to data from across the industry supported by dynamically created robust data-sharing agreements. TCS helped the Rail Delivery Group achieve its goals with speed and efficiency.
Underpinning the Rail Data Marketplace is Google Cloud as the digital core for a strategic move toward scalability, performance, agility, and innovation. Google Cloud’s ApigeeX was chosen as the API management platform to manage the landscape of high-volume API-driven applications. With Apigee's advanced API management tools, TCS could monitor, analyze, and channel traffic, ensuring optimal resource utilization and consistent user experiences.
Within a year of its launch, the Rail Data Marketplace supported 4,000 data-sharing agreements, and more than 1,500 organizations registered to use it.
While it is still early days for the platform, it is already sparking innovation across the industry. One operator has used the data to build a program that allows users to ask questions about their service on WhatsApp and in return receive natural language responses.
TCS Dexam, which enables seamless data exchange at the enterprise level, was crucial to the Rail Delivery Group’s data democratization initiative.
