Challenge

AmBank required future-ready core systems to deliver superior customer experience.

AmBank, one of Malaysia’s largest financial services groups, needed to overhaul its two legacy core banking systems along with 90 peripheral systems in order to improve product bundling capability and service availability. This would mean implementing scalable systems that offer superior functionality and ease of use, improve product time-to-market, and provide an integrated view of customers to the bank. Based on domain expertise and extensive understanding of Islamic banking, AmBank decided to partner with TCS BaNCS to implement a robust core banking solution.

Being a strong cultural fit in terms of functionality and features and backed by TCS’ strong implementation roadmap, TCS BaNCS was chosen for AmBank’s transformation initiative – ‘AmHorizon’. TCS BaNCS for Core Banking seamlessly integrated with AmBank’s existing infrastructure, while its service oriented-architecture guaranteed failure-proof implementation. AmBank was the first in the world to use the new Branch Channel built on JEE platform. The key modules included deposits, payments, Islamic banking, and loans. Phase one of the transformation involved migrating the dated core banking engine and teller front, and implementing a new data warehouse. Using the ‘big bang approach’, the transformation went on to impact over 5000 users, including 179 branches, head office departments, and regional business centers, providing:

  • Islamic and conventional banking capabilities on a single instance
  • 360-degree-view of customers for better services and cross-selling
  • Improved response time and 24/7 service availability
  • One interface for multiple channels such as ATM, internet banking, contact center, and branch banking

AmBank and TCS BaNCS won the “Best Single Country Core Banking Implementation” award for 2014 at The Asian Banker Technology Implementation Awards Programme.
