As we prepare for the TCS Amsterdam Marathon to be held later this year, let’s look at some interesting figures from the 2023 edition held last October.
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2023 was a grand affair with around 45,000 runners from all over the world participating in this prestigious event. The marathon witnessed a massive gathering of sports enthusiasts from over 130 different nationalities, making it the most international sports event of the year in the Netherlands.
On Sunday, October 15, around 20,000 participants took part in the full marathon, a record number for the main distance of this event. The TCS Amsterdam Marathon holds a huge appeal for marathon runners from all over the world. More than half of the runners (65%) come from outside the Netherlands.
Did you know that the TCS Amsterdam Marathon has the World Athletics Platinum label and is one of the fastest courses in the world?
Amsterdam ranks as the fourth fastest marathon city. Last year’s event saw a strong field of participants, including world-class runners Birhanu Legese, Bernard Koech, and Tiruye Mesfin. In the two previous editions, both the women's and men's course records were broken. In 2022, Angela Tanui completed the women's course in 2:17:57, while Tamirat Tola smashed the men's record in 2:03:39 back in 2021.
The average age of the participants in 2023 was 37 years, one and a half years younger than the previous year. The youngest runner appearing at the start was four years old, and the oldest runner was an impressive 84.
With help from TCS as the title sponsor, the Amsterdam Marathon looks to enrich the experience of runners and spectators through technology every year.
In collaboration with Le Champion and Mizuno, TCS launched a mobile game called 'Marathon Runner,' designed to engage a diverse audience leading up to the marathon. 'Marathon Runner' takes players through the marathon course, starting at the iconic Olympic Stadium.
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2023 App, powered by TCS, allowed runners and supporters to get the most out of their marathon experience. One of the key features of the app was live tracking, which enables runners to track their progress and supporters to follow runners along the route. A new login page for runners displays start information, wave time and a QR code for bib collection for ease on race day. Also, the new Get Social feature enabled users to take selfies, choose their favorite selfie frame and post on social channels.
The Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) is the official charity partner for the TCS Amsterdam Marathon.
Runners and their supporters contribute to groundbreaking research at the UMC Cancer Center Amsterdam through KWF. To date, over €3 million has been raised, showing that each runner can truly help make a difference.
